Johnson C. Smith University

The School of Social Work at Johnson C. Smith University is an academic unit designed to focus on the undergraduate and graduate disciplines of the field of social work. The BSW Program’s mission is to provide students with a liberal arts and social work education that prepares them for graduate school or to enter the job market as competent entry-level generalist practitioners working with individuals, families, small groups, organizations, and communities.
The BSW Program is an active partner with the North Carolina Child Welfare Education Collaborative. Students interested in child welfare are encouraged to apply to the collaborative through the Field Education Department. As a participant of the Collaborative students must complete and pass a course in child welfare and complete a social work internship within North Carolina Department of Social Services. Students entering into the internship must complete an internship application, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, complete training as mandated by the Collaborative, and complete a 420-hour year-long internship.
